This Is IHDE: Connecting Healthcare Across Idaho

Idaho Health Data Exchange (IHDE) is Idaho's health information exchange, helping connect healthcare providers and organizations so important health information can securely move where it is needed.
Today, IHDE connects more than 2,500 providers and has facilitated the exchange of more than 750 million messages.
But those numbers only tell part of the story.
Behind them are healthcare providers trying to make more informed decisions, organizations working across different technology systems, patients receiving care in different locations, and an industry moving toward a future where healthcare information needs to be more connected, accessible, and usable.
Still Idaho. Still Connected. Continuing to Evolve.
IHDE has been part of Idaho's healthcare ecosystem for years.
The mission at the center of that work remains simple: help healthcare information securely reach the right people who need it.
What has changed is the healthcare environment around us.
Patients increasingly receive care across multiple organizations. Healthcare technology continues to advance. New interoperability standards are changing how systems communicate. Federal requirements are placing greater emphasis on access and exchange. And healthcare organizations are asking more from their data than ever before.
Simply having health information isn't enough anymore. It needs to be able to move.
And increasingly, it needs to arrive in a way that can be used.
That's where IHDE continues to evolve.
What Does IHDE Do Today?
At its core, IHDE helps create connections.
A patient may see a primary care provider in one community, complete laboratory testing somewhere else, visit a specialist in another city, and receive hospital care through an entirely different health system.
Each organization may use different technology.
The patient, however, is still the same person.
IHDE helps participating healthcare organizations securely exchange available health information across those different systems and settings.
That connectivity can give authorized healthcare professionals additional context when caring for a patient and help healthcare organizations coordinate information across organizational boundaries.
In a state where patients may travel significant distances for care, those connections matter.
More Than 2,500 Connected Providers
Today, more than 2,500 providers are connected through IHDE.
Those connections represent healthcare professionals and organizations working across different communities, specialties, and settings.
Behind every connection is the same basic challenge:
Healthcare doesn't happen in one place.
Neither should healthcare information.
IHDE works behind the scenes to help participating organizations exchange information so healthcare can remain connected even when patients move between providers, communities, and systems.
More Than 750 Million Messages Exchanged
IHDE has now facilitated the exchange of more than 750 million messages.
It's a large number.
But what matters isn't simply how much information moves.
What matters is whether healthcare information can reach the people who need it, securely and at the right time.
That is where the conversation around health information exchange is heading.
The next chapter of interoperability isn't simply about connecting systems.
It's about making those connections increasingly meaningful and useful.
Healthcare Interoperability Looks Different in 2026
The technology behind healthcare data exchange continues to change.
Terms like FHIR, APIs, TEFCA, interoperability, electronic prior authorization, and patient access have become increasingly important across healthcare.
Some of those terms sound highly technical. The idea behind them isn't.
Healthcare organizations need better ways to securely exchange information.
Modern standards such as Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, better known as FHIR, are creating new ways for healthcare systems to request, exchange, and use information.
IHDE continues to participate in that evolution.
Recent IHDE work involving large-scale FHIR exchange has demonstrated what modern healthcare interoperability can look like at scale while also highlighting an important lesson:
Moving data is only part of the equation. The next step is making it useful and actionable.
That is a conversation IHDE intends to continue leading in Idaho.
Built for Idaho Healthcare
Idaho presents its own healthcare challenges and opportunities.
Patients may travel between rural and urban communities for care. Specialty services may be located hours away. Healthcare organizations vary significantly in size, resources, technology, and the populations they serve.
Healthcare information often needs to move across different systems, organizations, and care settings. That's exactly why interoperability matters. IHDE exists to help create connections across those boundaries.
IHDE supports healthcare environment where information can move more effectively across Idaho's healthcare community.
Security Still Comes First
As connectivity grows, protecting health information remains essential.
Access to health information is governed by privacy, security, authorization, and appropriate-use requirements designed to protect patient information.
IHDE continues to prioritize the security of the information exchanged through its network while working with participating organizations to support appropriate access.
Because better connectivity should never come at the expense of trust.
